About the painting
Jan Asselijn (c. 1610-1652) painted The Threatened Swan around 1650, in oil on canvas. The painting shows a swan fiercely defending its nest against an approaching dog. Inscriptions were added later, after which it was seen as an allegory of Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt protecting the country. In 1800 it became the very first acquisition of the Nationale Konst-Gallery, the forerunner of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it hangs today.

Frequently asked questions
Does The Threatened Swan decorative cushion come with filling?
Yes, The Threatened Swan decorative cushion comes with the cushion filling included. There is no need to buy a separate inner cushion: take it out of the packaging, give it a shake and place it on your sofa, armchair or bed. Any questions about the cushion? Feel free to email us at support@zenxstore.nl.
How big is this cushion?
The cushion measures 40 x 40 cm. That is a common standard size for decorative cushions and fits most sofas, chairs and beds. The white swan stands out best on a dark or blue sofa; on a light sofa, combine it with a plain dark blue cushion.
Where is the real Threatened Swan painting on display?
Jan Asselijn's original painting, made around 1650, hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The canvas is large, about 144 x 171 cm. In 1800 it was the first acquisition of the Nationale Konst-Gallery, the forerunner of the Rijksmuseum, which places it at the very start of the Dutch national art collection.
What does The Threatened Swan mean?
Asselijn painted a swan defending its nest against a dog. Words were added later: the swan became the Grand Pensionary, the dog the enemy of the state, and an egg was labelled Holland. The painting thus came to be seen as a symbol of Johan de Witt protecting the Netherlands.
Is this decorative cushion a good gift?
Definitely. With its striking white swan and the story behind the painting, this cushion is a special gift for art lovers, nature lovers or a housewarming. It is in stock in our warehouse in Rosmalen and we ship it free of charge within the Netherlands, with a 14-day cooling-off period.
