E-bike rules in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, an electric bike counts as a regular bicycle (pedelec) if the motor has a maximum rated power of 250W and only assists while you pedal, up to 25 km/h. A throttle or a purely electric riding mode that works above 6 km/h falls outside those rules: the bike is then classed as a moped requiring a registration plate, insurance and a driving licence. Tuning is not permitted. DYU also lists a purely electric riding mode without pedalling for the M20. If that mode is active on your bike, you may not ride it on public roads or cycle paths in the Netherlands without a registration plate; only use it on private land. Ask us before you order which version you will receive.
